the Soland of Hong Kong, appointing

Hong Kong, December 27th, 1858.

My dear Mr Steedman,

As you are already aware, there is some uncertainty as to Mr Stanton's returning to resume the Colonial Chaplaincy in this place. Under such circumstances, I feel that any application for the post in question can only be made by you or by anyone on your behalf contingently.

I am, however, at liberty to state to you (and you may make use of this information should you think fit to note) that if the vacancy actually takes place and the Secretary of State should appoint you as Colonial Chaplain, it would give me considerable satisfaction to believe that the appointment had been conferred on you.

Rev. S. W. Steedman, Military Chaplain.
